Title: The Perfect Us

Author: Durjoy Datta

Publisher: Penguin Random House, India

Ratings: 4.6/5

Perfect! Perfect story. Perfect artistry of emotions. Perfect portrayal.

The Perfect Us is a story of a couple who are passionately in love with each other. Avantika is an investment banker and Deb is a corporate professional and a failed writer. They both fell for each other in their college times and they got married. They spent their lives enjoying, trekking, going for parties, celebrating their weekends, having couple goals, loving each other, fitting endlessly between cities and jobs and whatnot. Deb thought that it was perfect. He didn’t even think of having a family, but Avantika, she always wished to have one. Ten years passed, but Deb wasn’t ready for it. Whenever Avantika raised this topic, he felt he wasn’t enough for her anymore which he used to think that he would be forever.

This is a story of how a couple feels and compromises with each other when it comes to having kids and having a family. Avantika and Deb were trying for it for a year, but they were unable to make it. Avantika and Deb went for the medial check-up and then they came up with a solution for having a baby.

Positives:

  • Deeply and beautifully portrayed in the third person

The book is written in the third person but you will feel the depth of the story as if it’s written in the first person. Initially, you will get bored but then you will be fascinated by the author’s way of expressing even in the third person.

  • Man’s emotion, as if walking in women’s shoes

It is unbelievable that a man has expressed what it feels like to be a woman, a pregnant woman. What all the responsibilities a woman has to handle and what compromises she has to make. Even if it is a death of the baby who was growing inside her womb, she will have to take the blame. Hats off to Durjoy Datta for understanding and expressing it so well.

  • The truth behind every story

The story digs out the truth that doesn’t matter how much a couple love each other, one bad thing will ruin that affection. And also, your partner will love your kids more than you. 😛

  • Too emotional

It is a very emotional story that at one point you won’t be able to hold your tears.

Negatives:

  • Desription of usual routine

You might loose interest in the beginning as the book starts with the description of characters usual routine.

  • Hell lot of questions

Yes, questions do make the readers curious, but Durjoy has taken it too seriously making it a bit boring in between.

Overall, the story is beautifully written and must read.
