Title: After You
Author: Jojo Moyes
Publisher: Penguin Random House
After You is a second sequel of Me Before You. After You is a story of a girl Louisa who learned to live even after the guy she loved, died. The first part of the book, Me Before You, is a story of Louisa & Will. Will killed himself in the first part. The second part is the continuation of the story of how the girl lived with deep grief and how she learned to come out of it.
After Will’s death, Louisa started living in London in a flat that Will left for her without her knowledge. She worked in a bar in the airport and obviously she never liked that work, mainly the dress of that workplace. She lived a miserable life. She didn’t have any path for life to walk on. She tried to do things differently to bring a change in her life, but it at the end of the day she missed Will. To just recover from her past, she joined a group Moving On circle where people with same grief met and talked about how it felt. Once, she even fell from the rooftop and landed with serious injuries. The accident could have been a life lesson to her, but unfortunately, she didn’t learn it.
Just imagine if someday, in the midnight, a girl knocks at your door & says that she is the daughter of your ex-died boyfriend, what would you do? And this happened with Louisa, she met Will’s daughter, Lily. Lily totally showed the features of a teenager as she was one. Entry of Lily in Louis’s life gave her hope to live. Lily was one of those mischievous teenagers who just leave in the middle of the night without telling you their whereabouts. But still, Louisa took care of her as her own daughter.
Louisa also met a smart guy, Sam who saved her when she fell from the rooftop. Sam worked as a paramedic. They fell in love with each other but because of Louisa’s past grief, they were certainly not clear whether they were in a relationship or in a ‘relationship’! Sam had always been a nice guy and after a long time Louisa felt safe and happy with someone.
The author has written the story in a very purest form without forgetting the small details of the family bond, teenager’s life and duty of a paramedic’s job. While reading the book, you will realise how important the details are and also, they fit the storyline.
The grief that we carry after someone’s death is well portrayed within the pages of this book. The pain that always keeps on widening the hole in our heart ruins our moment to moment life. After meeting Sam, how difficult it was for Louisa to accept him entirely is well elucidated.
Maybe Will never loved Louisa enough to stay with her and that made her feel weaker. After meeting Lily, she thought that now it’s her duty to take care of her, but when Lily left with Will’s mom, she realised she was investing her time in the wrong person.
The writing style is engaging but at some places, the readers will lose interest. It is not the story of this book that will make you turn pages after pages, but the story of Me Before You.
The story conveys the message that the one who loves you is the one who stays.
