Title: That Thing About You
Author: Abhai Dev
Publisher: Write India Publishers
“What if coincidences in our lives are nothing but a result of a dice thrown by some higher being?”
The book That Thing About You revolves around this line. The story starts with two people at some alien place discussing a course of action that now now changed the lives of a few people here on earth. Then, the story of our protagonist takes shape – Subodh, a normal middle aged man working 9-5, who gets his heart broken by a colleague he was deep in love with. The real story starts when a series of mysterious incidents take place and change his life for ever. These events initially intrigue him, but with time he becomes cautious of it. This book is a total nostalgia for every kid who grew up believing in the kind of heavenly love that even makes bollywood remorse.
Our protagonist learns to take rejection and move on in a very unique way which not only changes his behaviour but also how he see’s and interacts with the world around him. The uniqueness of this book is that even when the story is simple and common one, the way it had been portrayed is completely beautiful.
This story sends out a bigger message about maturity in the modern times, and how we are the ones that direct our lives through our actions and our day to day life routine.
To some extent reading this book feels like the author has tried real hard to fill in a few pages. You might get bored in between, trying to understand the relevance of few chapters.
One of the things I personally loved about this book is that how Abhaidev has talked about mental health. Through this story of Subodh, the author has conveyed the importnace of taking care of ones mental health; not feeling ashamed of approching someone for help during these times. The attention to all the details is what kept my mind engaged.
Even though the story gets boring, in the end, its all worth it because you couldn’t have expected a better ending. It’s a bit of surprise actually how Abhaidev manages to touch that nerve of his reader that make him/her close their eyes and just be mesmerised by the beauty of a childhood filled with stories of fairy tales and Godly love.
This book is worth reading.
