Have you ever thought who developed audio technology? Who sets up microphones and speakers at concerts and shows? How are drums, guitar and other instrument mixed with singing? Audio engineering is what makes all this possible. Starting from composing background music to making it easy for people to hear, it’s the responsibility of audio engineers.

Audio engineering, also known as sound or recording engineering, is the branch of science which deals with the study of music and sound. The aim of audio engineering is to assure that high quality and crystal-clear sound is recorded.

Audio Engineer

The audio engineers operate, repair, maintain and set up the audio recording systems. They work in coordination with other people like directors, editors, video operators, etc. Also, they are responsible for developing high-quality music and other sound effects in the studio.

The audio engineers work in the technical aspect of recording. Placement of microphones, pre-amp knobs and setting the levels of sound is the responsibilty of an audio engineer. Also, the audio engineers design and develop musical or audio technology working.

Common Concepts In Audio Engineering

The common concepts covered in audio engineering are –

  • Equipment and tools
  • Video audio effects
  • Recording techniques
  • Audio mixing
  • Surround sound
  • Electronic synthesis
  • Film, game and TV audio

A basic level of audio engineering covers the fundamentals of sound production and recording technique. It covers sound characteristics, use of microphones, design objectives in audio projects and acoustical principles. Audio engineering also covers psychoacoustics and waveform physics.

Synthesis is covered widely. It involves the combination of two different musical styles that learning the origin of electronic sounds and processing of sound signals. Audio engineering also includes audio mixing, exploring the mixing process. This process involves learning to adjust the volume and tonal characteristics of the different sound source during live recording or performance.

One of the most important skill is included in this, i.e., audio for video. An audio engineer learns the impact of audio when mixed with a video. It includes picture synchronization and time code.

Audio Post-Production is one of the significant modules to be covered in this engineering. It includes the production of audio tracks and sound designs for videos and film. The comparison between surround sound and regular sound is essential. This includes learning the different recording techniques as well.

In the last decade, we have seen a significant change in the world of audio production. There’s a lot to see in the future as well. This industry will come up with better audio technology.
