Title: she must be mad

Author: Charly Cox

Publisher: Harper Collins UK

Genre: Poetry

Rating: 4.5/5

Do you remember the first time when your heart skipped a beat at the sight of the first love of your life? How did you plan the next events in your mind right after a boy from your class or town who never talked to you, texted you on Facebook? But does it ever go the way you planned? Did you spend your days loving yourself more, or your body, after someone saw it not like a masterpiece and magic but just a piece of flesh and blood? With whom did you spend your life’s strangest nights, when you compared the size of the world in your mind to the real world? Was it you lying coldly on your bed, your fingers intertwined with the fingers of your other hand and legs mingled together like one, like alone?

It was just you and your mind hijacking over.

she must be mad is a collection of poems that sing the songs of that first love and the muse of lonely nights. This book consists of four sections –

  1. she must be in love
  2. she must be mad
  3. she must be fat
  4. she must be an adult

Each of Charly Cox’s poem will take your smashed heart do two things. One, put a band aid over some of the wounds one by one. Two, thrust the dagger deeper, piercing your wounds a slightly more. That’s how her poems will hit you. You will read the poems, and at the same time you’ll become her poems.

This book is a call for all the young women, who explore, discover, thrive and still survive the vastness of today’s world. Her poems are window to the minds that are suffering. Through her debut poetry collection, this poet has taken a great initiative in raising awareness about mental health. This poet writes with a cause.

Body shaming, one of the causes for an anxious mind, has broken people to great extent. Her poems are a solitude for those minds which do not see themselves when they look at the mirror, but just their body.

Details always touch me, and so I enjoyed reading the poems in this book. Most of all, I loved her prose poems. Charly Cox has such rhythm to her words that not even once you would resist the feeling of turning the pages over until you finish the book.
